How does declining testosterone affect my health?

Unfortunately, some men’s bodies do not produce enough testosterone. These men may notice symptoms such as diminishing muscle mass and more frequent feelings of tiredness and irritability. Perhaps your sexual desire isn’t what it was or you are having problems concentrating.

In fact, many men with low testosterone levels can report symptoms such as sweating, feeling cold or hot flushes. Of course, not all these symptoms necessarily appear at the same time. Furthermore, different symptoms may be displayed to varying degrees by different people. While these symptoms can also be associated with stress at home or at work, there is nevertheless evidence to believe that they may also be connected to low testosterone levels.

It is estimated that low testosterone affects 20% of all men over the age of 60 (Harman et al.: Longitudinal effects of aging on serum total and free testosterone levels in healthy men. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2001; 86: 724-731.). If you are not sure whether you might be suffering from testosterone deficiency, why not try our Testosterone Check. This will help you to confirm any symptoms you might have and to decide what steps to take next.

Declining testosterone can cause:

  • reduction in muscle mass and strength
  • increased irritability or depression, fatigue, decreased concentration
  • loss of typical male pattern hair growth (reduced beard growth, decreasing body hair)
  • sweating, feeling cold, hot flushes
  • reduced sexual desire and ability to have an erection
  • dry and wrinkled skin
  • osteoporosis (bone thinning)

Not all these symptoms necessarily appear at the same time. Also, different symptoms may be displayed to varying degrees with different people.
